Sil Canyons: What to See and How to Get There
What are the Sil Canyons?
The **Sil Canyons** are an impressive natural gorge located in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, in Galicia. Shaped by the Sil River over millions of years, these canyons reach heights of up to 500 meters, creating a landscape of steep hillsides covered in terraced vineyards, known as "socalcos," along with both Mediterranean and Atlantic flora. This unique landscape not only offers spectacular views, but has also given rise to a rich wine-making and monastic tradition in the region.
The Sil Canyon acts as a natural border between the provinces of Ourense and Lugo, spanning municipalities such as Parada de Sil, Nogueira de Ramuín, Sober and Pantón. The combination of its distinctive geology, biodiversity and cultural heritage makes it one of Galicia's most emblematic destinations.
Several reservoirs shape the current configuration of the Sil River, including the San Esteban reservoir, or Santo Estevo, which forms the navigable stretch you're about to visit.
Sil Canyons, history and heritage
Although the catamaran tour focuses on the natural beauty of the Sil gorge, some of the Ribeira Sacra's most iconic historical treasures await nearby. You can visit the imposing Santo Estevo Monastery, now converted into a parador, the unique rock-carved San Pedro de Rocas Monastery, or the sober and majestic Santa María de Ferreira Monastery.
And if you're into views with history, **Castro Caldelas Castle** awaits high above, offering postcard-worthy panoramas over the Sil valleys.
These places aren't part of the boat route itself, but they round out an unforgettable experience in one of Galicia's most surprising destinations.
How to get there?
The Sil Canyons are located in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, between the provinces of Ourense and Lugo. The main access depends on which side you want to visit: the left bank (Ourense) or the right bank (Lugo). Both offer viewpoints, trails and piers, but access routes vary slightly.
From Ourense
From Ourense city, you can reach the viewpoints and piers in under an hour by road. To get to the Ribeira Sacra in Lugo province (Sober, Monforte), the usual route is the N-120. To reach the Abeleda Pier, you can go via Monforte or via Castro Caldelas.
To visit the Ourense side, you can head to Castro Caldelas and return via the Sil route passing through Santo Estevo, making a circular route.
From Monforte
From Monforte, the capital of the Lugo side of the Ribeira Sacra, you'll reach the Doade, Sober and Amandi area in about 30–40 minutes. This side is full of vineyards and wineries, and also boasts excellent viewpoints.
You'll find a lovely route between Doade and Sober that runs parallel to the Sil, dotted with viewpoints and special spots like centuries-old chestnut trees and significant churches.
From the Meseta (via the N-120)
If you're coming from Castilla y León, Ponferrada, León or even Madrid, the most practical route is the N-120, a national road that crosses the Sil near Monforte de Lemos.
From there, you can take several detours depending on which side of the canyon you want to visit:
For the Lugo side, turn off towards Sober and reach Doade, or continue to Monforte and head towards Castro Caldelas.
For the Ourense side, continue along the N-120 to Os Peares or Luíntra.
Bus, motorhome or camper access
There have recently been incidents with buses getting stuck on the route to the river. To reach the Abeleda Pier, a bus won't have any problems — the road is winding, but manageable — and motorhomes are fine on other routes too. That said, we always recommend checking with local operators if you're planning to reach the river via other secondary routes.
Around the Sil Canyon there are several municipal motorhome areas, and a private one in Sober, Solpor Camper Park.
The wine culture of the Sil Canyons.
The Ribeira Sacra as a whole, and the Sil Canyons in particular, have gained significant tourist relevance in recent years thanks to two elements: the landscape and the wine.
The banks of the Sil are part of the Ribeira Sacra Denominación de Origen, producing Amandi wine. This area has historically been a wine-producing region, dating back to Roman times.
Up until the mass depopulation of the area in the 1950s–60s, many families cultivated vines along the Ribeira, but the more rugged areas were gradually abandoned, with only the more accessible vineyards surviving.
With the creation of the Denominación de Origen, and thanks to limited but valuable mechanization options, some of the harder-to-reach vineyards have since been recovered.
The viewpoints of the Sil Canyon
One of the most spectacular ways to enjoy the Sil Canyons is from above. Along both banks of the river you'll find numerous viewpoints, many of them signposted, offering views of the striking contrast between the water, the vegetation and the vineyards clinging to the hillsides.
We can't claim to be objective, but our favorites — the ones we enjoy most — are on the Lugo side.
The ones we recommend here are found along the road running through the Sober municipality, parallel to the Sil River, between the town center and the parish of Doade.

Until just a few years ago, the Sil Canyons were barely known or recognized, even within Galicia — their presence went unnoticed in every guidebook. Cars rarely stopped at the viewpoints, the first catamaran didn't arrive until the 1990s, and locals were often puzzled, not quite understanding what people had come to see.
However, little by little, the Sil Canyons have become a top-tier tourist destination — no longer just regional, but national. Alongside tourist homes and apartments, new infrastructure has sprung up (from footpaths to shuttle buses) to make this destination a truly unforgettable experience.

Culture and Ethnology
Until the San Estevo reservoir was built, the Sil River was much more closely integrated with the upland communities. Communication between the two banks was far more frequent, with some settlements now submerged where ferrymen once worked.
How to visit the Sil Canyons by boat
Seeing the Sil Canyons from the water is, for many people, the most spectacular way to experience them. Sailing along the river lets you take in the true height of the canyon walls, the seemingly impossible terraced vineyards, and the serenity of an almost untouched landscape.
What are the boat tours like?
Tours run by catamaran, with regular departures from several piers located at strategic points along the river:
- Santo Estevo Pier (Ourense side)
- Doade Pier (Lugo side)
- Abeleda Pier, right between both banks
Trips usually last between 60 and 90 minutes and include onboard commentary on the canyon's history, heroic viticulture and the natural surroundings.
It's an activity suitable for all ages and requires no prior experience.
Do I need to book in advance?
During spring, summer and autumn — especially on weekends and public holidays — it's highly recommended to book your spot in advance, as demand tends to be high and availability is limited.
